They are a fashion educational institution and uses its vast archive to curate exhibitions, both in its own space in Miami and in collaboration with museums worldwide. This video features a mini crash course on how to maintain an archive of clothing with the highest museum standards while keeping design and storytelling front of mind. Просмотров 38 тыс.Месяц назад
In this new streetwear era, we are seeing less Supreme and more tech wear, Salomons, and Carhartt. Whatever happened to streetwear? Is it different? Has it disappeared? Are fashion designers still using streetwear as inspiration and guidance for their collections? Does it still continue to inspire the luxury fashion sector, or did it fade from public dominance after Virgil's tragic passing? Tod...

The Power of High Fashion's Exclusivity
Просмотров 31 тыс.3 месяца назад
Fashion is notoriously an exclusive industry - luxury must be perceived as scarce and prestigious. That results in exclusivity permeating every sector of the industry, from the prices of luxury fashion products and goods, to where those luxury clothing pieces are being sold, to the entirely inaccessible quality that is a hallmark of many artisanal fashion brands. Is exclusivity annoying? Do I e...
How Easy Is It to Go to Fashion Shows?

This Autumn/Winter Paris Fashion Week felt like the right time to answer some questions specifically about the process of attending fashion shows, for luxury brands or small fashion designers. We talk about this and so much more on this 2024 edition ...
Is Being An Introvert Impossible in Fashion?

The Worst Fashion Shows of All Time

How do i sell couture clothes in the middle of indiana? I'm a 24yo couture designer. I've been studying garment technique & construction since i was 12. I finally have a language developed & an essential construction exploration that I actively experiment with. Now i just have to show off my stuff but i dont believe in fast fashion & my clothes are art pieces not utility pieces. It's not received well here but i don't want to comprise my morals to 'advertise" my stuff. Sos. What do i do?

Rewriting your message for clarity and coherence: I've been a designer for 12 years, having studied at a major fashion university in New York City. When I moved here, I thought I'd graduate and immediately start my own label-looking back, that's quite amusing! Over the years, I've worked for major brands and high-end designers, but found that creativity dwindled in those environments. If you aspire to start your own label, working for other companies first is crucial. It helps you learn the business while preserving your creativity by designing on the side. By age 30, I ventured into another field-product and stationary businesses-which has been thriving and profitable. This endeavor has taught me invaluable lessons in the business side beyond just the creative aspect. Despite knowing that starting a fashion business entails initial losses or breaking even for about a decade, I'm now approaching 35 and slowly preparing to launch my fashion venture. Your video's title caught my attention because it resonates deeply with my journey. One additional piece of advice for young designers: launching a line and facing failure can significantly heighten the challenges of establishing yourself in the industry, so truely take your time!

Taste is an over and misused word. Ask any gay man and they'll swear they have taste. Ask any influencer and they'll swear they have taste. Ask Kanye West, he'll swear he has taste. People with actual taste are pretty boring. I know people on England, the continent and Japan with taste. It's rarer outside. Taste is acquired by being privileged and experiencing it first hand or finding a way to acquire it if you didn't. Taste isn't very exciting or terribly interesting it's mostly following rules and being appropriate. Style and elegance are what really matter, authenticity and ruggedness if you're a man.

Fashion leaders used to be interesting people that were admired for their refinement of their exciting or eccentric lifestyles. You're right, now it's all Kylie Jenner and Anna Wintour. The scholarship that propped up fashion for decades and pushed it into the realm of fine arts has been suffocated. I don't know a single fashion designer that seems interesting or I admire for being incredibly talented, worldly or refined. So many folks in the industry are just nepo babies or talentless children of extremely rich people and incapable of inventing new ideas. Fashion has been replaced by "look at me" narcissism. Social media has obliterated Fashion, which was never for the working classes and has only recently become accessible on any level. I can't think of any contemporary "socialite" that isn't completely gross. I spent most of my young adult life studying fashion and working in London, Paris and SF. My problem now is that it's entirely marketing. The Victoria Secret Show, PR and ANTM are what poor people think fashion is like. Also telling people that Zara dupes are the same as actual luxury goods hasn't helped. Beauty lies in the quality of the goods and materials as well as the assembling. I would also add that Anna Wintour's influence pushing fashion to appeal to the widest swath, has lasted far too long and to the detriment of fashion. Real fashion is people like the late Bill Cunningham, Isabella Blow and Anna Piaggi. Designers like St. Laurent, Balenciaga even Miucca Prada are highly intellectual with a real curiosity and understanding of art, art history, sociology, politics and even anthropology. They possess foundational knowledge required for building or making something new and substantial. Sadly this type of knowledge is no longer valued in the Kardashian-Wintour era and canceled for being racist and phobic by people unencumbered by intellectual curiosity. I would argue that we are in the midst of a maoist cultural revolution that seeks to destroy everything of actual culture and beauty. Wearing fake eyelashes and screaming the filthiest thing you can come up with into a microphone seems to be the standard but it is anything but uplifting. Paintings aren't bitchiness and neither is fashion. It's about the intersection of refinement, skill and an adept use of iconoclasm. Unfortunately we have arrived at the bottom of a downward slide that probably began in the radical permissiveness of the 60s, with the help of modern media. Making products that appeal to the widest possible swath of society should be the realm of toilet paper manufacturers and chicken nugget processors.

Back in the 90s it was NOT a big deal for a man to wear a dress. Especially, if he was a rock star or celebrity like Kurt Cobain. It’s more of a big deal for a man to wear a dress in this day and age because nowadays, if a man wears a dress, he wants you to believe in his delusion that he is a woman.

Iris Apfel said: "In the right tonality, I have never met a colour I didn't like." I am with her, and I think this also applies to colour combinations. Anything goes if you get the shade/tone, pattern and texture right. That said, I'm not a fan of black and brown together, I think it looks depressing.
